The Island has been Alameda's online news source since February 2008. It's run by Michele Ellson, a longtime newspaper journalist, and it features local news, kids' sports, event listings and more. Recent additions include a page devoted exclusively to the development saga out at Alameda Point and, most exciting of all, columnist Eve Pearlman, who most recently worked as the columnist at our local paper, the Alameda Journal. My goal for the site is essentially to recreate what I've always thought was good - and utterly necessary - about newspapers for a new generation of readers. This year (at least!) I'll focus on building advertising that works for businesses and supports the site while refining the site's narrative and news offerings.
